Spain has a very high rate of smartphone usage with nearly 90 percent of the population being active users. Revenue has grown rapidly since 2019, alongside growth in the average usage per day, which was just under three hours each day.
Spain has one of the largest economies in the app sector in Europe based on total employment, which reached 159,000 jobs in 2022. The growth in the app sector is in contrast to the wider economic fall in the first year of the coronavirus pandemic, and as Spain’s economy recovers it can be expected that the app market will continue to strengthen.
Some app publishers have begun to reflect the movement to promote other languages spoken in Spain, particularly Catalan, Basque and Galician. In June 2023, Google Maps announced it would release voice navigation in Catalan and in 2022, FC Barcelona and Spotify jointly confirmed Catalan would be available on the music app. Basque was added to Google Translate software in February 2023, which also includes Galician and Catalan.
Spain’s longstanding restrictions on ride-hailing platforms have been challenged by the European Court of Justice, which ruled in June 2023 that Barcelona’s ratio of licenses given to traditional and ride-hailing drivers was unlawful. However, regional authorities are able to require additional criteria for the licenses of private-hire car drivers, to limit the number of ride-hailing drivers.
Growing attention is being paid to the development of all-in-one superapps, which would offer banking, shopping and task services. A survey found 44 percent of Spanish respondents were interested in the prospects of an everyday app, although many were concerned about data security.
